Republican Senator Requests U.S. State Department to Provide Documents on Robert Malley Investigations

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley from Iowa has requested that the U.S. State Department update him on the latest investigations regarding Robert Malley and provide a copy of the final report of these investigations. According to the Washington Free Beacon, Grassley's letter to Secretary Antony Blinken marks the first effort by a senator to obtain documents related to the State Department's internal investigations into 'Robert Malley's misuse of classified information.' In his letter, Grassley emphasized the importance of a thorough and comprehensive review of the allegations against Malley and stated that Congress should be kept informed of the investigations and their outcomes. Grassley expressed disappointment with the Biden administration's handling of the investigations, adding that the State Department's decision to withhold information about Malley from both the public and Congress is unacceptable, and that a series of disclosures regarding the investigations has created issues in the absence of credible information sources. The Washington Free Beacon also reported that the State Department declined to comment on Grassley's request, but a spokesperson stated that the department does not comment on individual security clearances and will not disclose congressional correspondence, while Robert Malley remains on leave. In 2019, Senator Grassley also compelled the State Department to provide its investigations into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's use of an unauthorized email server. Robert Malley, the U.S. Special Envoy for Iran, was suspended from his position earlier this year amid an FBI investigation into allegations of 'misuse of classified information.' Recently, a report by Semafor about an Iranian influence network within the U.S. government aimed at affecting U.S. policy towards Iran has made headlines. The report claimed that at least three associates of Robert Malley, including Aryan Tabatabai, a senior Pentagon official and Malley's colleague, were part of this influence network. Jake Sullivan, the White House National Security Advisor, commented on Sunday, July 16, regarding whether Robert Malley would return to the Biden administration, stating: 'Robert Malley has served honestly and well in the administrations of [multiple presidents]. He is a government employee. He is a diplomat. He has been involved in high-stakes diplomacy for a long time. He is someone whom many of us, including myself, have great respect for. I cannot speak about the current situation. I must refer you to the State Department on this matter.' Congressional Republicans remain dissatisfied with the State Department regarding the Robert Malley case. Six Republican senators have called for an immediate justification of Aryan Tabatabai's security clearance. The House of Representatives has prohibited the use of the 2024 State Department budget to remove the IRGC from the terrorist list. The Pentagon Deputy stated that Aryan Tabatabai's security clearance is under review. The U.S. has stated that the resumption of nuclear negotiations is contingent on practical steps being taken by the Iranian government. Robert Malley has become a professor at Princeton University.
