Republican Senators Focus on Security Risks from Afghan Resettlement Program under Biden Administration

Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee have warned about national security risks stemming from the Afghan resettlement program under President Joe Biden. This program allowed Afghans to enter the United States following the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. The committee held a hearing on the 'Operation Allies Welcome' program on Wednesday, January 24, following the indictment of an Afghan national named Rahmanullah Lakanwal for shooting two members of the U.S. National Guard in Washington last November. In this attack, one National Guard member was killed and another was injured. Senator Chuck Grassley, the committee's chairman, stated, 'Today's hearing is being held after the brutal attack by an Afghan national on two members of the National Guard, which resulted in the death of Sara Baxter and the severe injury of Andrew Wolf.' He claimed that the Biden administration 'failed to enforce our immigration laws and properly vet the Afghans they brought to the United States.' However, Democratic Senator Alex Padilla disagreed, asserting, 'The claim that Afghan refugees are not fully vetted is completely fabricated.' The U.S. Department of Homeland Security described the suspect in the November shooting as a 'criminal alien' and stated that the previous U.S. administration allowed 'this terrorist' to enter the country as part of the 'Operation Allies Welcome' program on September 8, 2021. Following the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, tens of thousands of Afghans entered the United States under this program. Caroline Levitt, a White House spokesperson, stated at a press conference that the Trump administration 'is actively reviewing the status of all Afghans brought to the country during Joe Biden's presidency.' She added, 'Any individual who poses a threat to national security or our citizens will face deportation.' Donald Trump, the former U.S. president, described the attack as a 'terrorist act' in a televised speech hours after the shooting, stating that the suspect was a foreign national who had been transferred to the United States by the Biden administration during the evacuation flights of Afghans after U.S. forces left Afghanistan. He emphasized that the perpetrator of this attack would face 'the harshest possible punishment.' John Ratcliffe, the former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), also stated that 'following Biden's disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Biden administration justified bringing the shooting suspect to America in September 2021 because he had previously cooperated with the U.S. government, including the CIA, as a member of a partner force in Kandahar.' Ratcliffe emphasized that this cooperation 'ended shortly after the chaotic evacuation.' Kristi Noem, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, also announced on social media that the suspect is an 'Afghan national' who entered the U.S. as part of the 'Operation Allies Welcome' and among 'the influx of Afghans who entered without adequate vetting.'
