Republican Senators in the U.S. Seek Sanctions Against Taliban for 'Human Rights Violations'

A group of Republican senators in the United States announced on Wednesday that they are drafting a bill to impose strict sanctions on the Taliban due to 'widespread human rights violations' in Afghanistan. According to Fox News, Senator Jim Risch, a Republican member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, stated in an interview with the network: 'If this bill is passed, it will require the President to impose strict sanctions on the Taliban for 'terrorist activities,' 'drug trafficking,' and 'human rights violations,' including the abuse of women.' The report indicates that the bill, titled 'Taliban Sanctions Act,' introduced by Senator Jim Risch, will amend the roadmap and work to hold the Taliban accountable for its abuses of power. Senator Jim Risch, referring to the 'behavior of the Taliban,' said: 'The Taliban has become a 'detestable element,' and our policies must reflect this reality.' Therefore, 'we cannot simply blame the Taliban and expect them to change their behavior.' If this law is passed, all transactions will be prohibited, and assets held by the Taliban will be frozen, as well as all visas or other documents allowing the Taliban to enter the United States will be revoked. In this context, Senator Jim Risch, along with eighteen Republican senators, emphasized that Congress must act quickly to pass this bill, as the Taliban's influence is expanding without a strong U.S. presence in Afghanistan. Previously, following the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in 2021, the Taliban has suppressed women, minorities, and youth in Afghanistan and has withheld humanitarian aid from people in urgent need.
