Republican Senators' Plan for Stricter Sanctions Against Iran

A group of Republican senators in the United States has begun supporting a proposal that would require the Obama administration to implement stricter sanctions against the sectors of Iran's economy and industry involved in ballistic missile production. According to the Associated Press, Senator Kelly Ayotte from New Hampshire introduced this bill on Thursday, March 17. She and other supporting senators argue that the Obama administration has failed to properly punish Iran for its repeated missile tests. This statement comes as the U.S. government imposed sanctions on Iran's missile program earlier this year. However, Republican senators believe these sanctions have been weak. The bill is backed by Mitch McConnell, the Republican majority leader in the Senate, indicating that its review may begin quickly. Previously, Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State and a current Democratic presidential candidate, also stated that Iran should be sanctioned for its ballistic missile tests. Paul Ryan, the Republican Speaker of the House, also said on March 8 that Iran's missile tests violate international law and Congress will continue its efforts to impose stricter sanctions against Tehran. Despite widespread criticism from the international community regarding these tests, Iran has always claimed that these missiles are purely defensive and do not violate the JCPOA or UN Security Council resolutions. Iran tested the long-range Emad missile once in October and most recently tested two ballistic missiles during a two-day military exercise in March. The news of this exercise faced significant reactions and criticisms from the global community, and the U.S. permanent representative to the UN stated that the issue of these tests would be raised in the Security Council. A meeting held on March 14 ended without results. In this context, warnings from France and the U.S. indicate that Tehran may face new sanctions. Zarif stated that missile tests are not in contradiction with the nuclear agreement. An American representative said that Iran's missile tests deserve a response from the Security Council. The Security Council meeting regarding Iran's missile tests ended 'without results,' and Rouhani expressed satisfaction with the inconclusive outcome of the Security Council meeting.
