Republicans Gain Majority in the Senate

Republicans have gained the Senate majority with victories in Ohio and West Virginia. This is the first time in four years that Republicans have secured the Senate majority. The Associated Press, NBC, and CNN reported early Wednesday morning that with at least 51 of the 100 Senate seats now under Republican control, the party will hold the Senate majority in the new term. The Nebraska battleground late Tuesday propelled Republicans to this highest level. Senator Deb Fischer overcame the challenge from independent newcomer Dan Osborn. This occurred after Ted Cruz, the Republican senator from Texas, defeated Democrat Colin Allred. The future composition of the United States Congress and which political party will control it will be determined on Tuesday alongside the presidential election, and the outcome will play a significant role in the fate of legislative bills for any candidate heading to the White House. All 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are up for voting for new two-year terms across the United States. In the U.S. Senate, there is also competition for 34 of the 100 seats for new six-year terms. Prior to Tuesday's election, Democrats held a very narrow control of the Senate while Republicans controlled the House of Representatives. The tight race in the U.S. congressional elections coincides with the presidential election. Yasmin Ansari, an Iranian-American woman who made her way to the U.S. Congress, is also highlighted.
