Republicans in Congress Attempt to Block Ibrahim Raisi's Entry to the U.S.

Republican lawmakers led by Claudia Tenney, a member of the House of Representatives, and Ted Cruz, a Republican senator from Texas, have proposed a legislative measure aimed at preventing Ibrahim Raisi, the president of the thirteenth government of the Islamic Republic, and his delegation from attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. According to the Washington Free Beacon, this bill, known as SEVER, references Raisi's government's role in 'terrorism and attacks against American forces and their allies' in the Middle East and seeks to 'prevent Ibrahim Raisi from entering the United States.' Simultaneously, lawmakers argue that hosting Raisi in New York is inappropriate due to his record of 'human rights violations' and 'organizing terrorist activities' worldwide, including 'the execution of thousands of dissidents in the 1980s.' While the passage of this bill faces challenges before Raisi's arrival, its goal is to send a message of 'not welcoming terrorists' in the United States. This action is also based on previous sanctions issued by former President Donald Trump and may set a 'precedent' for future Republican administrations to prevent officials from 'terrorist governments' from attending the United Nations. Raisi's presence at the United Nations coincides with the first anniversary of public protests in Iran over the murder of Mahsa Jina Amini, who was killed by the country's morality police. The report also states that opponents of the Islamic Republic in the United States plan to hold protests during Raisi's visit, coinciding with the anniversary of the public uprisings in Iran. Earlier, Claudia Tenney had told Voice of America that 'Iran is a large and wealthy country and should not be under the yoke of this evil regime.'
