Republicans Withdraw from 'Congressional Ethics Office' Proposal Amid Trump Opposition

Following Donald Trump's public opposition to a proposal by Republican representatives regarding the activities of the 'Congressional Ethics Office', which reportedly undermined the independence of this office, the representatives have retreated from the initiative. The proposal, introduced by Republican Representative Bob Goodlatte, was criticized by opponents who claimed it would disrupt the independent functioning of the 'Congressional Ethics Office'. Previously, the proposal had faced backlash and criticism from Democratic representatives and some Republicans, including Paul Ryan, the Republican Speaker of the House, who expressed his opposition. Shortly thereafter, the President-elect of the United States also joined the critics. He tweeted, 'With all the things Congress has to do, should they be weakening the independent ethics oversight group?' He later added in another post, 'Focusing on tax reform, healthcare, and many other things is far more important.' At the end of Trump's last tweet on this matter, a hashtag with the three letters DTS can be seen, which apparently stands for 'Drain the Swamp', one of his campaign slogans and promises to combat what he described as corruption in Washington and to bring about changes in this regard in federal institutions. Following this, Republican Party leaders called for an emergency meeting, and it was subsequently announced that Republican members of the House of Representatives unanimously decided to abandon the changes. The Congressional Ethics Office was established in 2008 with the approval of the House of Representatives. This mechanism is a bipartisan oversight group. Its job is to receive reports and review allegations of misconduct by members of the House and their aides. If necessary, these reports are sent to the House Ethics Committee for potential review and action. Goodlatte's proposal would have placed the Congressional Ethics Office directly under the oversight of the Ethics Committee. This proposal, for instance, would have prevented the office from issuing separate public reports.
