Request by the American Jewish Committee to the United Nations to Condemn the Islamic Republic

Following Ibrahim Raisi's speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, the American Jewish Committee condemned the Islamic Republic's record on "human rights violations" and support for anti-Israel terrorist groups, emphasizing its call for the international community to prevent the Islamic Republic from acquiring nuclear weapons. According to the statement from the American Jewish Committee, Ibrahim Raisi's speech at the UN General Assembly, one year after the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the morality police, exacerbates the threat as the Islamic Republic remains a dangerous and destabilizing force worldwide. Simultaneously, the statement emphasized that the Islamic Republic, as a supporter of groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, provides direct aid and political support to Israel's enemies and seeks to undermine regional and global security. Ted Deutch, the CEO of the American Jewish Committee, stated in this statement that while the Islamic Republic continues to increase its uranium stockpile, we must prevent the further development of its ballistic missile program, which in turn could provide nuclear weapons that directly threaten Israel and its people. The statement from the American Jewish Committee insists that the Islamic Republic imposes terror "beyond its borders," and the world cannot allow this to happen, stating that now is the "time for action." The statement, referring to the "ongoing human rights violations" by the Islamic Republic, emphasized that the United Nations must also speak firmly against human rights violations, which reflect the government's complete disregard for human rights. The American Jewish Committee's statement concluded by highlighting the widespread protests that began with Mahsa Amini's death a year ago and the subsequent crackdown, symbolizing a long history of violent repression of opponents, women's rights activists, and journalists by the Islamic Republic, calling for its condemnation by the United Nations. Ibrahim Raisi spoke at the UN General Assembly for the second time since becoming the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran on Tuesday, September 19. In part of his speech, while he considered the "ban on hijab" in some Western countries as anti-free speech, many women in Iran have been arrested and faced heavy judicial sentences over the past year for choosing optional clothing. Raisi also claimed that "the people of West Asian countries know that Western democracy is nothing but occupation and war, and this democracy is now nearing its end." The President of the thirteenth government of the Islamic Republic, while Iran suffers from major environmental issues, also expressed readiness to share the Islamic Republic's experiences in environmental preservation and the use of clean and sustainable energy. He referred to the previous year as "the year of victory for the Iranian people" and, without mentioning the widespread protests in Iran following Mahsa Amini's death and the killing of over 500 protesters during the protests of 2022, claimed that Western countries made a "miscalculation" last year. He also asserted that the global order is changing and that the West is becoming isolated, stating that Iran will play an important role in this new order.
