Request for the Release of Narges Mohammadi to Receive the American Physical Society Award

The American Physical Society has jointly awarded its biennial "Sakharov" Prize to Narges Mohammadi, Vice President of the Human Rights Defenders Center and a graduate in solid-state physics, who remains imprisoned in the Islamic Republic, and "Ravi Kuchimanchi" from the Indian Development Association. Simultaneously, a campaign for the release of Narges Mohammadi is ongoing on social media. The statement from the American Physical Society mentions that this award is given for "leadership in activities related to peace, justice, and the abolition of the death penalty, and unconditional efforts to promote human rights and freedoms for the people of Iran." "Amir Hossein Ganjbakhsh," a prominent biophysics researcher and member of the American Physical Society, told Radio Farda that a campaign will be launched to demand Narges Mohammadi's freedom so that she can travel to the U.S. to attend the American Physical Society awards ceremony and receive the Sakharov Prize in person. The 2018 American Physical Society awards ceremony is scheduled to take place from March 5 to 9 (March 14 to 18, 1396 in the Persian calendar) in Los Angeles. The judiciary of the Islamic Republic has sentenced Narges Mohammadi to a total of 16 years in prison. She was arrested and imprisoned again on May 4, 2015, following new charges against her.
