Rescue of Five Iranian Migrants in Waters Between France and Britain

Five Iranian migrants attempting to reach Britain by inflatable boat were rescued on Saturday, May 25, in the waters off the northern coast of France by a French rescue team. According to Agence France-Presse, these individuals, who were aboard a motorless inflatable boat, lost their paddles and became trapped in fog. French maritime officials stated that the five Iranian citizens were rescued at 8 AM on Saturday while suffering from extreme cold and were transferred to the coastal city of Boulogne-sur-Mer after receiving treatment from an emergency services team. Reports indicate that the rescue occurred after five hours of search operations by a French Navy aircraft, which identified the boat, and a group known as the 'National Sea Rescue Society' (SNSM) was dispatched to the location to rescue them. At the time of their rescue, they were floating approximately 16 kilometers from Cap Gris-Nez, roughly halfway to Britain. Local French officials issued a statement saying, 'Despite the apparent proximity of the British coast to the French coast, crossing this waterway is extremely dangerous and risky.' On May 19, a Colombian citizen attempting to illegally reach Britain via the same route was identified while suffering from hypothermia and was rescued. Previously, on April 3, French Navy officials reported rescuing six Iranian migrants whose boat was sinking in waters near the port of Calais. According to the Associated Press, due to adverse weather conditions and thick fog, the rescue operation for these individuals took more than two hours. The six Iranian migrants, who were heading to Britain, were handed over to border police. The coastal city of Calais has the shortest water route between France and Britain, and since the dismantling of the camp known as 'The Jungle' in this city, many refugees residing in Calais have intensified their efforts to reach British soil.
