Research Report: 'Sexual Abuse in the Family'

Sexual abuse is one manifestation of domestic violence. When a person is forced to do something against their will due to their gender through coercion, violence, threats, and deception, they have experienced sexual and gender-based violence. According to global statistics, 30% of women, or 736 million women, have faced sexual violence from their sexual partner or other family members. However, boys and men can also be victims of this type of violence. Exploitation and coercion into prostitution, any sexual contact with individuals under 18 years old, rape and assault, deprivation of education and work, and verbal and psychological humiliation are examples of this type of violence. More than 70% of respondents to an online call from the 'Open Data Iran' website reported being subjected to domestic sexual abuse by one of their close or distant relatives. It should be noted that cultural and legal restrictions in Iran have made it difficult to obtain accurate statistics in this area. For example, the exposure of domestic sexual abuse and its connection to 'honor' is one of the limiting factors in such reports. Additionally, forced sexual relations of men with their wives are not considered sexual abuse legally and in many cases culturally. This call was available to users from February 6 to March 10, 2023. 937 individuals participated in this call, of which 65% were men and 33% were women. Two percent belonged to other genders.
