Researchers Concerned About the Death of Nearly All Adelie Penguin Chicks in Antarctica

Concerns among researchers and biologists regarding the death of nearly all Adelie penguin chicks in the 'Southern Land' have increased; what researchers describe as a 'catastrophic event.' The 'World Wildlife Fund' confirmed in a report on October 14 that the death of almost all the chicks occurred due to an unprecedented amount of 'sea ice' forcing their parents to travel to much farther areas in search of food. Sea ice is frozen seawater, and because the density of ice is less than that of water, it remains on the ocean's surface. The Southern Land encompasses land, ice, and water in Antarctica and the South Pole. Adelie penguins are a species of penguins discovered in 1840 and are the only residents of Antarctica. However, until recently, they were classified as 'least concern' in terms of their survival status. Reports indicate that the last time the penguin parents returned from a long food-seeking trip, only two live chicks were waiting for them. Researchers have stated that this event occurred last summer and has only been recorded once in the past 40 years. However, the problem is not just the death of the chicks, as the penguins left behind to care for the chicks are also facing malnutrition. Rob Dwyer, the research director of the World Wildlife Fund, stated, 'Although the impact of this catastrophic event can currently only be seen among Adelie penguins, estimates indicate that Antarctica is warming, leading to another long-term challenge.' Experts say that the amount of polar ice fluctuates each year, but climate change has caused these fluctuations to follow a severe trend. The World Wildlife Fund has urged countries that are set to meet this week in Australia to confirm a newly protected marine area to come up with solutions to support penguins and other species.
