Response to Criticism; Jake Sullivan: Biden Has Taken Risks by Supporting Ukraine

Jake Sullivan, the U.S. National Security Advisor, during his speech at the Aspen Security Forum, stated that the Biden administration has accepted significant "risks" in sending advanced weapons to Ukraine. He also rejected accusations that the United States has been overly cautious in arming Kyiv. According to Politico, during this conference, criticisms from Republicans regarding the speed of decision-making and the Biden administration's actions in sending weapons to Ukraine were raised, with Republican Senator Dan Sullivan from Alaska stating just before Sullivan's appearance at the conference: "Every time Ukraine asks for something, the government worries about escalating tensions, and this itself is a deterrent." Additionally, during the conference, Senator Jim Risch from Idaho said: "The United States needs to stop worrying about what Russia might do and prefer that Putin wakes up worried about what the United States is going to do." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who joined the conference via video link, criticized the lack of F-16 fighter jets and long-range missiles that were supposed to be sent by the U.S. to Ukraine. Jake Sullivan, during his speech, said: "I think our performance and the breadth of capabilities we have provided refute these claims. We have been risk-takers and will continue to be ready to take risks in supporting Ukraine." Questions regarding the Biden administration's speed in supporting Ukraine remain a challenging issue for senior U.S. officials, who, like Sullivan, insist that Washington has acted as quickly and responsibly as possible. However, this criticism is unlikely to dissipate anytime soon.
