According to Reuters, the committee stated in its report that Boris Johnson deliberately misled the UK Parliament in an unprecedented manner regarding the illegal parties held in his office during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings of this report further damage the already tarnished credibility of the former Prime Minister. Nearly a year ago, Mr. Johnson spoke about remaining in the position of Prime Minister until the 2030s. However, the privileges committee, the main disciplinary body for lawmakers, stated that he should now be deprived of personal access to Parliament. The committee also accused Boris Johnson of 'colluding in a campaign of abuse and attempts to intimidate' against Members of Parliament. Boris Johnson, who led the Conservatives to a decisive victory in the 2019 elections, described the report in his usual aggressive style as 'lies' and 'games,' claiming that committee members intended to take revenge on him. The report, which is over a hundred pages long, outlines six events during the COVID-19 pandemic at Downing Street, the offices, and the Prime Minister's residence. The committee stated, 'We conclude that Mr. Johnson seriously demeaned Parliament by deliberately misleading it. This humiliation was much more serious because it was carried out by the Prime Minister, the highest-ranking member of the government.' According to the committee, there is no precedent in British history for any Prime Minister deliberately misleading Parliament. The report recommends that Boris Johnson should not have access to Parliament, unlike most previous British Prime Ministers and lawmakers. The UK Parliament will review the committee's proposal next Monday. A spokesperson for Rishi Sunak, the UK Prime Minister, in response to a question about the report's conclusions, stated that the Prime Minister had not yet read it but believed that the committee had conducted its investigations properly and 'it is not right to question or criticize its performance.' The committee, consisting of four Conservatives and three opposition lawmakers, rejected Boris Johnson's claims that the parties were within the rules and that his advisors supported him. They stated that Boris Johnson 'was deliberately not truthful when he tried to reinterpret his statements to Parliament to avoid their clear meaning and present another interpretation.' The committee's statement indicated that if Johnson were still a Member of Parliament, it would recommend a 90-day suspension from the House of Commons. Last week, Boris Johnson resigned from Parliament after seeing a copy of the report, criticizing its findings, and stating, 'I rightly believed that these events were logically necessary for work purposes. We were managing a pandemic.' He announced that the report marked a 'horrible day' for Members of Parliament and for democracy, saying, 'This decision means that no representative is free from revenge or expulsion based on false accusations by a small minority who want to remove him from the House of Commons.' The Labour Party, the Conservatives' rival, welcomed the report's findings.
