Return of the U.S. Aircraft Carrier 'Theodore Roosevelt' from the Middle East; 'Abraham Lincoln' Remains

U.S. officials announced the return of the aircraft carrier 'Theodore Roosevelt' from the Middle East. According to the Associated Press, the aircraft carrier 'Abraham Lincoln' is currently present in the region. The Biden administration had strengthened the U.S. military presence in the Middle East to help defend Israel against potential attacks from the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxy groups, as well as to protect American forces. U.S. military commanders in the Middle East state that the presence of an American aircraft carrier and its accompanying warships has been an effective deterrent in the region, especially against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Since the attack by Hamas militants on Israel last October and the Israeli attacks against this Iran-backed group in Gaza, at least one U.S. aircraft carrier has been stationed in the Middle East, and at times, two aircraft carriers have been present simultaneously. The Associated Press reported that the decision to return the 'Theodore Roosevelt' was made as the Gaza war entered its eleventh month, with thousands killed and international efforts to mediate a ceasefire repeatedly stalled. Hamas and Israel have made demands that have been rejected by the other side. According to the report, during the first few months of this year, the aircraft carrier 'Dwight Eisenhower' remained in the Red Sea to help protect Israel and defend commercial and military ships from attacks by Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen. This aircraft carrier returned to the United States after eight months. U.S. officials, who requested anonymity, stated that the 'Theodore Roosevelt,' based in San Diego, and the destroyer 'Daniel Inouye' are set to be present in the Indo-Pacific Command area. Another destroyer from the strike group, 'Russell,' had previously left the Middle East and moved to the South China Sea. The 'Abraham Lincoln,' which is now in the Gulf of Oman with several other warships, entered the Middle East about three weeks ago and was present there alongside the 'Theodore Roosevelt.' Several U.S. ships are also in the eastern Mediterranean, and two destroyers and the guided-missile submarine 'USS Georgia' are present in the Red Sea. Tensions in the Middle East have escalated since August 6, following a deadly rocket attack by Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group, on northern Israel that resulted in the deaths of 12 children and teenagers. In response to this deadly attack, Israel targeted Foad Shakir, the highest-ranking military commander of Hezbollah, in Beirut on August 9. Following that, on the morning of August 10, Ismail Haniyeh, the then-political leader of Hamas, was targeted in a deadly attack in Tehran, which the Islamic Republic has attributed to Israel despite its 'neither confirm nor deny' stance. The Islamic Republic and Hezbollah have warned that they will not leave these attacks unanswered. In response to these developments, the U.S. adjusted its military posture in the region. On September 1, coinciding with the arrival of the 'Abraham Lincoln' in the Central Command area (CENTCOM), the deputy spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Defense noted the presence of two U.S. aircraft carriers, each accompanied by four destroyers, stating, 'This sends a very powerful message for deterrence.' He mentioned that this action 'sends the message that we will stand by Israel if the need arises to defend it.' CENTCOM reported the rescue of Iranian sailors by the 'Theodore Roosevelt' task group. The U.S. Department of Defense stated that changes in the U.S. military posture will impact the calculations of the Iranian government. The 'Abraham Lincoln' entered the Middle East with 'F-35C' and 'F/A-18' fighter jets. The Houthis have been accused of three attacks on a ship in the Red Sea. The arrival of 'F-22' fighter jets in the Middle East was stated by CENTCOM to be in response to threats from Iran and Tehran's proxy groups. The Middle East is at risk of escalating crises; 'F-18' and 'F-22' jets from the U.S. are heading to the region. The Pentagon announced changes in the U.S. military posture in the Middle East to defend Israel and reduce tensions. The U.S. is repositioning its military equipment to defend Israel against potential attacks from the Islamic Republic.
