Reuters cites six informed sources: Putin intends to remain in power at least until 2030

Six sources have told Reuters that Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has decided to run in the upcoming presidential election, which could allow him to remain in power for more than six more years, until 2030. Putin has taken steps to gain support from his main base of supporters, including security forces, armed forces, and voters outside of Moscow. Last June, he neutralized an armed rebellion by the Wagner mercenary group, bringing it completely under his control. Military, armament, and overall budget expenditures in Russia have increased, and Putin has made several public appearances in various regions of the country in recent months. One informed source told Reuters that Putin's decision to run in the upcoming election has been 'made.' Another source familiar with Kremlin decision-making confirmed that a decision has been made for Putin to participate in the upcoming election, and his advisors are preparing for his candidacy. Three other sources also stated that the decision for Putin to run in the March 2024 presidential election has been made. Reuters notes that these sources spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, stated that Putin has not yet commented on this issue and that the start of the election campaign has not been officially announced. The 71-year-old Putin has had the longest rule over Russia since Joseph Stalin, the former Soviet leader. Diplomats say there are no serious rivals to threaten Putin's chances at the polls. According to Reuters, this former KGB spy enjoys an 80% approval rating and can count on government and state media support, with virtually no public opposition to his continued rule. Moscow has previously suppressed many dissenting voices against Putin. The report of Putin's decision to run in the upcoming election comes as he has initiated a devastating war with his neighbor, Ukraine.
