Reuters cites 'two senior security officials' in Iran: No news of Ismail Qaani since last week

There has been no news of Ismail Qaani, the commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, since last week's Israeli army attacks on Beirut. Qaani had traveled to Lebanon after the killing of Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, in an Israeli airstrike last month. Reuters reported that this information was announced by two senior security officials in Iran. One of these officials stated that Qaani was present in Dahieh, a southern suburb of Beirut, during an attack that was reported to target 'Hashem Safi al-Din,' a senior Hezbollah official, but he did not meet with Safi al-Din. This official added that the Islamic Republic and Hezbollah have since been unable to contact Qaani. Israel has targeted multiple sites in Dahieh during its operations against Hezbollah, a group supported by the Islamic Republic. The second official also mentioned that Qaani had traveled to Lebanon after Nasrallah's death, and Iranian officials have been unable to reach him since the attack on Safi al-Din, who was expected to succeed Nasrallah. Hezbollah has not commented on Safi al-Din so far. An Israeli army spokesperson, when asked about reports regarding the possible death of Qaani in the Israeli attack on Beirut, stated that the results of the recent attacks on Beirut are still under investigation. He mentioned that Israel attacked 'Hezbollah's intelligence headquarters' in Beirut late last week, and there are questions about who was there and who was not, with further information to be provided by the Israeli army. A senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Abbas Nilforushan, was also killed during the Israeli attack that killed Hassan Nasrallah. Ismail Qaani became the commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after the killing of Qassem Soleimani in a U.S. drone strike.
