Reuters: The U.S. to Impose Over 500 Sanctions Against Russia

The U.S. Deputy Treasury Secretary said in an interview with Reuters on Thursday that the United States will target over 500 individuals and entities with sanctions on Friday, coinciding with the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Adeyemo added that this action, conducted in collaboration with other countries, targets Moscow's military-industrial complex and companies in third countries that facilitate Russia's access to necessary goods. At the same time, the U.S. Deputy Treasury Secretary emphasized, "Washington seeks to hold Russia accountable for the war in Ukraine and the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny." He stated, "Tomorrow, hundreds of sanctions will be imposed solely by the United States against Russia, but we must remember that it is not just the U.S. that is implementing these sanctions." The U.S. Treasury Department also stated that this sanctions package is the latest series of sanctions imposed by the U.S. and its allies following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and widespread destruction. The European Union also approved its thirteenth sanctions package related to Ukraine against Russia on Wednesday, targeting nearly 200 entities and individuals accused of assisting Moscow in acquiring weapons or involved in the abduction of Ukrainian children. Hours earlier, Britain imposed new sanctions against over 50 individuals and entities linked to Russia. According to British officials, these sanctions target key revenue sources for Russia, such as diamonds, metals, and energy trade, to weaken the "Russian war machine." The new penalties against Russia are announced as the U.S. and its allies seek to maintain pressure on Russia, although doubts remain about whether the U.S. Congress will approve additional security assistance to Ukraine.
