Reuters: Trump Representative's Trip to Qatar and Israel Aimed at Achieving Quick Ceasefire in Gaza

Reuters has reported, citing an informed source, that Donald Trump's special representative for Middle Eastern affairs has been dispatched on a diplomatic mission to Qatar and Israel with the goal of reaching a quick agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Israeli hostages before Trump takes office on January 20. According to the informed source, Steve Witkoff held separate meetings in late November with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. Reuters adds that these meetings indicate that the emirate of Qatar has resumed its role as a mediator in the Gaza conflict. This Gulf state, along with the United States and Egypt, has been mediating fruitless negotiations between Israel and the extremist group Hamas for months, which have neither led to a sustainable ceasefire agreement between the parties nor the release of Israeli hostages. The United States and many other Western countries consider Hamas a terrorist organization. Reuters further reports that Hamas representatives are likely to head to Doha, the capital of Qatar, 'soon' to initiate a new round of negotiations. The report states that a senior official of the current U.S. government has confirmed that members of Trump's team have been in contact with Middle Eastern officials. This American official stated, 'They support an agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza.' Trump: If Gaza hostages are not released by January 20, the Middle East will pay a heavy price. On Monday, Trump called for the immediate release of Israeli hostages in Gaza and threatened that if they are not freed before January 20, the Middle East will face severe consequences. Reuters adds that Witkoff, a real estate investor and financial supporter of Trump's campaign, has business ties with Qatar and other Gulf states but lacks diplomatic experience. According to the report, Trump's special representative for Middle Eastern affairs met with the Prime Minister of Qatar on November 22, who is also considered the country's foreign minister. Reuters, citing the informed source, continues that both sides agreed that a ceasefire in Gaza must be established before Trump takes office, as this would allow the Trump administration to focus on subsequent issues such as establishing stability in Gaza and the region. According to him, Mr. Witkoff traveled to Israel the day after this meeting and met with Benjamin Netanyahu and the families of Israeli hostages to update them on Trump's team's efforts to reach an agreement before January 20. Reuters recalls that the Prime Minister of Qatar traveled to Vienna on November 24 to meet with David Barnea, the head of Israel's Mossad, who has led negotiations between Israel and Qatar over the past 14 months. The informed source added, 'Plans are in place for the next round of indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas to be held in Doha soon, but no specific date has been set yet. Meanwhile, Hamas representatives are likely to return to Doha to prepare for negotiations.' Concurrently with the start of Steven Witkoff's visits, Donald Trump appointed Adam Bowler as the special representative for hostages. Mr. Trump noted that Adam Bowler was part of Jared Kushner's team for achieving the Abraham Peace Accords and is a hardworking individual with a successful track record in dealings with countries. According to Israeli media, given that the U.S. has no hostages in any other country or territory in the world besides Gaza, the appointment of Adam Bowler indicates the serious effort of the President-elect to free Israeli hostages from Gaza, seven of whom are also American citizens. On the other hand, the extremist group Hamas announced on Wednesday that Israel is planning operations to free the hostages, and in that case, they will be 'neutralized' (killed). The Israeli army reported on Wednesday that it presented its investigation report regarding the reasons leading to the deaths of six hostages who were killed in a tunnel in Khan Younis, Gaza, during the summer to the families of the victims.
