Rishi Sunak Rejects Deployment of British Military Trainers to Ukraine

Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, rejected the deployment of British forces to Ukraine for training Ukrainian soldiers on Sunday, October 1st. Earlier, Grant Shapps, the new UK Defense Minister, had stated that the location for training Ukrainian soldiers by the British Army might be moved from the UK to western Ukraine. In an interview with the 'Sunday Telegraph', he added that he was consulting with the British Army to transfer the training location closer to Ukraine and eventually inside the country. However, hours later, the British Prime Minister stated that the Defense Minister's proposal for British forces to train Ukrainian troops on their soil was not feasible for 'here and now' during the war against the Russian invasion. Rishi Sunak pointed out that the Ministry of Defense was recently reviewing potential plans for the 'long term'. He emphasized that no British soldiers would be deployed to participate in the war. Since early last year, over 23,500 Ukrainians have received combat training, including weapon handling and first aid in the field, at bases across the UK. Earlier this year, the UK committed to providing these combat courses to over 20,000 additional Ukrainians. Training Ukrainian forces is part of the UK's $2.8 billion aid package to Ukraine, which includes the provision of anti-tank weapons, missile systems, and other military hardware. Grant Shapps, who became the UK Defense Minister last month, also mentioned that he had recently discussed British naval assistance to commercial ships in the Black Sea with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He did not provide further details on this matter. The new Defense Minister noted the intention of BAE Systems, a defense and aerospace company, to begin production in Ukraine, stating that other British companies should also consider establishing production in Ukraine, not limited to military firms. Since the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Western countries have imposed several extensive sanction packages against Russia and its allies and provided military assistance to Ukrainian defenders.
