Rising Tensions in Palestinian Territories and Israel; Six Killed in Gaza

Reports indicate that in a new wave of violence in Palestinian territories and Israel, six Palestinian protesters were killed in clashes with Israeli soldiers on Friday, October 17. According to Reuters, a Jewish man also stabbed and injured four Arabs. An Israeli military spokesperson stated that soldiers opened fire after Palestinian protesters approached the Gaza-Israel border and threw stones and burning tires. Meanwhile, a hospital official in Gaza reported that six people were killed and 50 injured in the clashes on Friday. The report notes that in the latest round of violence in Israel and the West Bank, four Israelis and eight Palestinians have been killed. This violence reportedly began due to Palestinian concerns over potential Israeli actions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, with Palestinians claiming that Israel is seeking to change the rules of access to this sacred site for Jews and Muslims. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied any changes to the existing laws. However, this denial has had little effect on reducing violence. The report adds that Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, have called for restraint among citizens. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Mahmoud Abbas had previously instructed the Palestinian security forces to continue necessary cooperation and coordination with Israel to prevent worsening conditions. At the beginning of this round of clashes, an Israeli couple was shot and killed while driving through two Jewish settlements in the West Bank on the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, as they were heading to Jerusalem. Their four children, aged six months to nine years, who were sitting in the back seat, were unharmed in the shooting. In this context, there has been an increase in stabbings between Arabs and Jews in Israel.
