Kennedy Jr. stated in his announcement that his internal polling indicated that his continued presence in the race would be more detrimental to Trump and beneficial to Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, although public polls do not clearly confirm this impact. He referenced issues such as free speech, the Ukraine war, and the 'war on children' that initially led him to separate from the Democratic Party and enter the race as an independent, and now to support Trump. Kennedy explained that this decision came after discussions with Trump in recent weeks. He also mentioned that Trump offered him a job position should he return to the White House, although neither provided further details. This news follows days of speculation and contradictory statements from Kennedy's advisors and supporters, reflecting the complex and scattered nature of his campaign. Trump, who was campaigning in Las Vegas, called Kennedy's support a 'great honor' and evaded questions about a possible position for him. He stated, 'Kennedy is a respectable person. Not everyone agrees with everything he says, but that is true for anyone.' For many, it was unimaginable that a member of the Kennedy family, one of the most prominent Democratic families in history, would collaborate with Trump to prevent a Democrat from winning the election. Five members of the Kennedy family issued a statement on Friday calling his support for Trump 'a tragic end to a tragic story' and reiterated their support for Kamala Harris. In the statement released by Kennedy's sister, Kerry Kennedy, it said, 'Today's decision by our brother to support Trump is a betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold dear.' Recent polls indicate that Kennedy's support is in the single digits, and it is unclear whether he could even achieve this level of support in a general election. Some evidence suggests that Kennedy's presence in the race may be more detrimental to Trump than to Harris. According to a July poll, Republicans had a more favorable view of Kennedy than Democrats, and those with a positive view of Kennedy also had a significantly positive view of Trump (52 percent) compared to Harris (37 percent).
