Robert Mugabe finally stepped down from power on Tuesday after 37 years of ruling Zimbabwe, following pressure from the country's armed forces and concerns about impeachment in Parliament. According to Reuters, sources close to the negotiations stated on Thursday that Mugabe emphasized during the discussions that he wanted to die in Zimbabwe and had no intention of living in exile. A close government source, who requested anonymity, told Reuters: 'It was a very emotional and heartfelt moment, and he was very serious about it.' He added: 'It was very important for him (Mugabe) to have his residency security guaranteed in the country and to have the freedom to leave and travel whenever he wanted.' Last week, Robert Mugabe was initially placed under house arrest by the military in an action that analysts described as akin to a coup. This military action was a response to Mugabe's dismissal of the Vice President, which was said to be aimed at paving the way for his wife, Grace Mugabe, to come to power. A government source on Thursday told Reuters that the former president was aware of public anger towards his wife and her treatment of members of the 'ZANU-PF' party. He added: 'For this reason, he needed assurance that his family, especially his wife, would be safe and secure.' Mugabe's resignation at the age of 93, after 37 years of absolute power, marks the end of a historic era for Zimbabwe. Since 1980 and Zimbabwe's independence from Britain, he has been the only leader to govern the country. The sudden announcement of Mugabe's resignation after more than three decades of rule sparked joy and street gatherings among the people. In this context, Robert Mugabe resigned after 37 years as President of Zimbabwe, the ruling party initiated impeachment proceedings against him, CNN reported that Mugabe had prepared a draft of his resignation, and thousands of Zimbabweans demanded his resignation.
