Robert Mugabe Resigns as President of Zimbabwe After 37 Years

Robert Mugabe, the President of Zimbabwe, has finally stepped down from power after 37 years under pressure from the country's armed forces and facing impeachment in Parliament. This news was announced shortly after a joint session of the Zimbabwean Parliament in Harare was convened for the purpose of impeaching Mr. Mugabe, allowing him to resign before the impeachment could take place. According to CNN, the Speaker of Parliament read Mr. Mugabe's letter, which was met with repeated applause and shouts of joy from the representatives. Additionally, people outside the Parliament and in the streets of the city celebrated with dancing, cheering, and waving the Zimbabwean flag. Robert Mugabe had been under house arrest for six days following actions by military commanders that analysts described as a coup. This military action was a response to Mugabe's dismissal of the Vice President, who was believed to be a potential successor, paving the way for his wife to gain power. Mugabe's resignation at the age of 93 and after 37 years of absolute power marks the end of a historical era for Zimbabwe. Since 1980 and the independence of Zimbabwe from Britain, he has been the only leader to govern the country. The political decline of Robert Mugabe resulted from a struggle within the ruling party regarding his successor. The ZANU-PF party, which witnessed a split between supporters of former Vice President Emerson Mnangagwa and those of Grace Mugabe, ultimately ousted Mr. Mugabe from its leadership. According to reports from France, Emerson Mnangagwa is expected to succeed Mugabe in this situation. Robert Mugabe rose to power as one of the leaders of the Zimbabwean liberation movement and was once considered the Nelson Mandela of his country; however, from the beginning of his rule, he eliminated all rivals and opponents to consolidate his position and violently suppressed any political dissent over several decades. During this time, Zimbabwe's economy also severely declined, with rising inflation and prices, which was reflected in the draft impeachment proposal against Robert Mugabe. In this context, CNN reported that Mugabe had prepared his resignation letter, and the ruling party of Zimbabwe initiated the impeachment process against him. Thousands of people in Zimbabwe called for Mugabe's resignation, and the crisis in Zimbabwe continued with the military's presence in the streets of Harare, despite Mugabe's insistence on remaining in power.
