Rouhani to Attend UN General Assembly in New York

The First Vice President of Iran states that Hassan Rouhani will participate in the annual meeting of the United Nations. The international advisor to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic also spoke about pursuing what he described as 'America's breach of commitment in the JCPOA' in New York. According to IRIB News Agency, Es'haq Jahangiri announced on Sunday, September 21, that the President of Iran will travel to New York for the annual UN General Assembly. Over the past three years of his presidency, Hassan Rouhani has attended the UN General Assembly and met with leaders of several countries, including François Hollande, the President of France, and David Cameron, the Prime Minister of the UK. In 2013, at the end of Rouhani's trip to New York, the Presidents of Iran and the USA spoke on the phone for the first time since the severance of relations between the two countries in 1980. Jahangiri also responded to a question regarding America's 'breaches' in implementing the Vienna nuclear agreement, stating that 'if there has been a report' on this matter, it will be discussed in the sixth meeting of the supervisory board for the implementation of the JCPOA, and decisions will be made regarding it. Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, announced the sixth meeting of the supervisory board for the implementation of the JCPOA on September 8, stating that 'the latest status of the commitments of the Western parties' would be among the agenda items of this meeting. Ali Akbar Velayati, a member of the supervisory board for the implementation of the JCPOA, also mentioned that 'America's breaches in implementing the JCPOA' would be among the main topics of this board's meeting. So far, no details have been published regarding the results of this meeting. Iranian Foreign Ministry officials have previously protested against congressional resolutions and the actions of the US Treasury Department against Iran, accusing the United States of 'breaching' the implementation of the Vienna nuclear agreement while also stating that the Vienna nuclear agreement has not been violated by the US. The accusation of US obstruction in the implementation of the Vienna nuclear agreement is made by Iran, while US officials reject these claims, stating that they have acted even 'beyond their commitments' in the nuclear agreement. Restrictions on currency transactions and the non-cooperation of major Western banks with Iran are among the main complaints of Iranian officials. Meanwhile, Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, in an interview with the Lebanese network Al-Manar, which was republished in Iranian media on Sunday, accused US officials of acting 'against the spirit of the JCPOA' with a dual political game. In recent months, Iranian officials have repeatedly asked the US to remove 'psychological barriers' regarding European banks' cooperation with Iran and to assure European banks that they will not be penalized for cooperating with Iran. The US Secretary of State and his counterparts from the UK, Germany, and France, along with the EU's foreign policy chief, on May 20 issued a statement urging banks and traders not to overlook legal investment opportunities in Iran. These countries have also expressed readiness to resolve doubts in this regard. Some Iranian government officials, including Abbas Araghchi, Deputy Foreign Minister, have stated that besides the concerns of European banks about sanctions, 'weak financial discipline' of Iranian banks in not cooperating with European banks has 'not been ineffective,' and the Central Bank is working to resolve this issue. The annual UN General Assembly will be held from September 13 to 26 this year.
