Russia Accuses the United States of 'Threatening the West' and 'Obstructing' International Cooperation; US Calls This Claim 'Hypocritical'

On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the United States of being a 'threat' to the entire West and creating obstacles to international cooperation. These accusations were made during a special session chaired by Russia at the United Nations Security Council, which Russia currently presides over. In response, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the UN, called the claim 'hypocritical' and referenced Russia's invasion of Ukraine. During the meeting on 'multilateral cooperation for a fairer, more democratic, and sustainable world order,' Russia criticized the US for its 'exceptionalism' and quoted George Orwell's novel 'Animal Farm': 'All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.' Lavrov then attacked NATO's 'reckless' expansion in Europe despite repeated warnings from Moscow, claiming that the 'special military operation' in Ukraine was initiated to address security threats to Russia. However, around 50 countries, including the United States, issued a joint statement before the meeting, condemning Russia for its 'blatant violation' of Ukraine's territorial integrity and its 'hypocritical' attempts to present itself as a supporter of multilateral order. These countries also condemned Russia's aggression against Ukraine, North Korea's military support for Moscow, and Iran's violations of UN sanctions. They emphasized that 'Russia's illegal and hypocritical actions undermine multilateral and international cooperation, escalate regional tensions, and threaten international peace and security.' Asa Hutchinson expressed concern that Trump and Vance are not discussing continued aid to Ukraine. US allies in NATO are examining the impact of the US presidential election on the war in Ukraine. Zelensky stated that Ukraine needs more Patriot missiles and F-16 aircraft. The Prime Minister of Hungary provided 'explanations' to the European Union regarding his unannounced trips. The head of Ukraine's military intelligence reported several unsuccessful attempts to assassinate Putin. Russian and Ukrainian missile and drone attacks on each other's territory resulted in four deaths and dozens of injuries. Russia warned about the deployment of US missiles to European countries.
