Russia Advances in Kursk; Zelensky Emphasizes Commitment to Negotiations

On Saturday, March 9, Russia announced that it had reclaimed three villages—Viktorovka, Nikolayevka, and Staraya Sorochina—in the Kursk region, which had previously been captured by Ukraine. The Russians also claimed that with the intensification of conflicts in Kursk, they had regained two-thirds of the previously occupied territories from Ukraine. Reports indicate that as heavy Russian bombardments continue in eastern Ukraine, an attack in Dobripilya left 11 dead and 40 injured. Drone attacks in Kharkiv and Kherson have also resulted in several casualties. These developments on the battlefield come as Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, has introduced a high-level delegation for negotiations with U.S. representatives in Saudi Arabia. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is 'fully committed to dialogue,' but viewed the extensive Russian attacks as a sign of Moscow's unwillingness to end the war. Senior officials from Ukraine and the U.S. are set to meet in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, and Zelensky hopes these negotiations will be constructive. Kaya Kalas, the EU's foreign policy chief, condemned Russia's recent attacks, stating, 'Putin has no interest in peace, and we must increase military support for Ukraine.' Simultaneously, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, threatened Russia with new sanctions. On Friday, March 8, he announced that he was considering sanctions on the Russian banking sector and tariffs on imported goods from Russia to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. Trump clarified in a post on the social media platform 'Truth Social': 'Given the fact that Russia is currently heavily attacking Ukraine on the battlefield, I am strongly considering sanctions on banking sectors, sanctions [against other sectors], and tariffs against Russia until a ceasefire and a final peace agreement are achieved.' The U.S. President concluded by urging both Russia and Ukraine to 'go to the negotiating table before it is too late. Thank you!!!' Meanwhile, Seoul reported that North Korea has sent more of its troops to Russia. Ukraine accused Russia of bombing civilian shelters in Kursk and attacked the 'Russian Army Command' in Kursk. Russia is also attempting to cut supply lines to the city of Pokrovsk in Ukraine. Trump reiterated his consideration of tariffs and sanctions on the Russian banking sector. The Brussels meeting agreed to increase the military budgets of EU countries. An emergency meeting of European leaders concluded with Germany stating that support for Ukraine must continue. The U.S. has halted the transfer of classified information to Ukraine. The Democratic Party responded to Trump's speech at the joint congressional meeting.
