Russia Begins Military Exercises in Disputed Border Areas

On Thursday, March 5, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the start of a large military exercise in southern Russia and disputed border areas. According to Reuters, citing Russian media, more than 2,000 personnel from the Russian Army's air defense unit are participating in this exercise, which will last until April 10. Approximately 500 types of weapons will also be utilized during the drills. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense's statement, the exercises are being held in the Southern and Northern Federal Districts of the Caucasus, as well as in Russian military bases in Armenia, the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia, and the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed last year. Russia is conducting these exercises amid deteriorating relations with the European Union and the United States over Ukraine. Ukraine and Western countries accuse Moscow of supporting separatists in eastern Ukraine by sending troops and weapons, a claim that Russia has consistently denied. Meanwhile, the Russian Deputy Defense Minister warned about NATO's activities around Russia during a press conference. Anatoly Antonov stated, 'NATO countries are using the current situation in southeastern Ukraine as a pretext to advance and approach Russia's borders.' A NATO fleet entered the Black Sea on Wednesday, aimed at training the naval forces of Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey. In this context, there has been a prisoner exchange between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists. Ukrainian separatists announced that they would withdraw heavy weapons from the front lines, and the Security Council called for adherence to the ceasefire agreement in Ukraine. Ukraine has removed its heavy weapons from the front lines in the eastern front.
