Russia Captures Strategic Ukrainian City in Donetsk Region

Russian military forces have taken full control of the small city of Vuhledar in the Donetsk region. The Telegram channel 'Shot' and several pro-Russian military blogs announced this news on Wednesday morning, October 3rd, although the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation has not yet issued a statement on the matter. A day earlier, a Ukrainian official confirmed that Russian forces had reached the center of the city. This city, located at a strategic height and at the intersection of the eastern and southern fronts of the war, had resisted Russian attacks for two years. The city has been largely destroyed as a result of months of attacks and clashes. Images showing Russian army forces on the roof of an administrative building in the city center revealed almost complete destruction of many surrounding structures. Vuhledar, which had a population of about 14,000 before the war, is seen by Russia as a key city in the annexation of the entire Donetsk region. The city is also adjacent to a railway route that connects the Crimean Peninsula to the industrial region of Donbas, including Donetsk and eastern Luhansk, areas that have long been under Russian control, and this railway route could facilitate the movement of Russian military supplies in these regions. Meanwhile, drone attacks between Russia and Ukraine continue. The Ukrainian Air Force claims to have intercepted and destroyed eleven out of 32 Russian drones that flew towards various regions of Ukraine on Tuesday night. According to this statement, 10 drones were neutralized in central and northern Ukraine by electronic warfare equipment, and only four drones managed to return to Russia after leaving Ukrainian airspace. The Ukrainian Air Force did not mention the fate of seven other drones, which appear to have hit their targets. On the other hand, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that it shot down six Ukrainian drones over the Belgorod region on Tuesday night. As a result, two civilians were injured when a Ukrainian drone struck the village of 'Tishanka' in this border area. In another development, on the morning of Tuesday, October 3rd, six people were killed in a local market in the center of Kherson due to shelling by Russian artillery. Kherson was one of the first major cities to be occupied by Russian forces at the beginning of the war; however, these forces retreated across the Dnipro River nearly two years ago. Nevertheless, shelling of this city has continued almost uninterrupted over the past two years. On the same day, another attack on the city of Zaporizhzhia left one dead and 32 injured. These attacks occurred just as Ukrainians across the country were commemorating the victims of the war on a day designated as 'Defenders' Day.' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in remarks on this occasion, referred to the 'painful moments' inflicted on soldiers and the people of the country, thanked his army, and described the difficulties as 'the bumpy road to victory.' Since the beginning of the war, which has lasted more than two and a half years, both Russia and Ukraine have refrained from announcing official casualty figures. However, independent sources estimate the casualties for each country to be in the tens of thousands. In this context, Zelensky went to the White House with a 'victory plan'; Biden stated: 'Ukraine will prevail.' Casualties in the war in Ukraine have reached '280,000 dead and 800,000 injured.'
