Russia Claims Ukrainian Army Has Penetrated Kursk Border Province

Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, accused Kyiv of firing rockets at civilian and residential targets in the Kursk province, adjacent to the border with Ukraine. Simultaneously, pro-war Russian bloggers reported that Ukrainian army units have captured several villages near the border during their advance into Russian territory. In his remarks on Wednesday, August 8, during a government meeting broadcast on television, Putin described Ukraine's military operations as 'a widespread provocative act.' Before the President's statements, the temporary governor of Kursk reported that two people were killed due to Ukrainian drone attacks on areas around the city of Sudzha. On Tuesday, Moscow also stated that the Ukrainian army attacked Russian border areas with hundreds of troops. Putin stated, 'The Kyiv regime has initiated another widespread provocative act, attacking residential and civilian buildings and ambulances with various weapons.' Verification and independent confirmation of Mr. Putin's claims are currently not possible. Alexey Smirnov, the temporary governor of Kursk province, located near the Ukrainian border, stated in a message on the Telegram social network that two people were killed in a Ukrainian drone attack on an ambulance that was traveling near the city of Sudzha, which is about 10 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. He added that in this attack, the driver and one of the paramedics were killed, and the ambulance doctor was injured, urging local residents to donate blood. The Ukrainian government has not yet commented on the statements made by the Kursk governor. Verification and independent confirmation of his statements are currently not possible. The Russian Defense Ministry stated on Tuesday, August 8, that around 300 Ukrainian soldiers, supported by 11 tanks and over 20 armored and combat vehicles, crossed the border and attacked Russian army positions near the villages of Olshanya and Nikolayev-Darino. The Russian Defense Ministry added that its forces repelled the Ukrainian army's attack with artillery fire, air strikes from fighter jets, and drones, inflicting heavy casualties and forcing them to retreat. The Ukrainian government and army have not yet responded to the Russian Defense Ministry's statement. Nevertheless, Kremlin-supporting bloggers reported on Wednesday that Ukrainian forces had captured the two villages of Nikolayev-Darino and Surdlikovo located in the Sudzha area. These bloggers added that Ukrainian forces penetrated the Sudzha area on Tuesday and are now attempting to capture two more villages named Koncharovka and Olshanya. Ukraine has also not commented on these reports, which are impossible to verify. The Russian Defense Ministry also stated in a separate announcement that its air defense shot down 11 Ukrainian drones over four different areas in western Russia in the early hours of Wednesday.
