Russia Places Prominent Russian-American Journalist on Wanted List Over Criminal Charges

Russian authorities have placed Masha Gessen, a prominent Russian-American journalist and author, on a wanted list following the initiation of a criminal case against her for allegedly 'spreading false information' about the Russian military. According to Reuters, these charges stem from an interview Gessen conducted with Russian journalist Yuri Dud regarding Russian war crimes in Bucha, Ukraine. This action by Russian police is part of a broader crackdown on dissent in Russia since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Although Gessen, who holds dual citizenship and resides in the United States, is unlikely to be arrested, the Kremlin's suppression of anti-war voices has led to thousands of detentions and criminal cases in Russia. Concurrently, amid reports of deteriorating health conditions and lack of medical care for prisoners, concerns are rising regarding imprisoned opponents of Putin, including Alexei Navalny, the most prominent opposition leader in Russia. Earlier, on October 10, a court in Moscow rejected a complaint from Evan Gershkovich, a journalist for the American newspaper Wall Street Journal, regarding the extension of his pre-trial detention. Gershkovich has been detained for over six months and remains in 'temporary detention.' The Russian Federal Security Service arrested the 31-year-old journalist on April 9 this year in Yekaterinburg on charges of espionage. He is the first American journalist to be detained on espionage charges in Russia since the end of the Cold War. Russia has once again extended the detention of the American journalist, and the Wall Street Journal has stated that the charges against him are false. Secretary of State Blinken has called for the 'immediate release' of the American journalist during a conversation with Lavrov.
