Russian and Belarusian Athletes to Compete as Neutral Participants in the Paris 2024 Paralympics

Russian and Belarusian athletes will participate as neutral competitors in the Paris 2024 Paralympics. According to Reuters, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) did not approve a complete ban on the two countries' participation in the Paris Games due to Russia's military invasion of Ukraine. IPC members voted against a total ban on Russia at their meeting in Manama, Bahrain, and then approved a proposal for a partial suspension of Russia for two years from all competitions, subject to reevaluation at the next meeting. The committee stated that Russia's membership rights have been suspended for another two years and that Russian athletes and coaches will compete individually and as neutrals in the Paralympic Games and global and regional competitions. The committee emphasized that these athletes will not represent Russia and will not have the right to use the country's name, flag, or anthem. This condition also applies to Belarusian athletes and coaches, a country considered a close supporter of Moscow's policies. The IPC's decision faced criticism from several organizations and sports groups, including the 'Global Athlete Movement,' which expected Russia to be completely excluded from the Paris Paralympics. This movement viewed the IPC's decision as a sign of Russia's influence in global sports. In the upcoming meeting of the International Olympic Committee in Mumbai, India, a decision will be made regarding the participation of Russia and Belarus in the Paris 2024 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee has not suspended the Olympic Committees of Russia and Belarus or their members, but following Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, it has prevented athletes from these countries from participating in global and regional competitions. Recently, the committee advised international sports federations to gradually allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete as neutrals. According to this committee, athletes should not be punished for the actions of governments and should not suffer due to the actions of politicians.
