Russian Balloonist Breaks Round-the-World Travel Record

A Russian balloonist, who is also an Orthodox priest, has managed to break the record for non-stop travel around the world by balloon. Mr. Fyodor Kaniukov circled the globe exactly once and landed in Australia, where he started his journey, after 11 days. This record, registered by the Federation of Air Sports, surpasses the previous record set by American Steve Fossett in 2002 by two days. Kaniukov, who is 65 years old, was reported to be in very good spirits and very happy after landing. The route of this Russian aircraft began in northern Australia. He first flew over New Zealand and, after crossing the Pacific Ocean, reached South America. He passed through the Strait of Magellan and returned to Australia after crossing the Southern Ocean. On his way back to Australia, a polar air system pulled his balloon towards the South Pole. Kaniukov told the BBC World Service, 'It is very scary to go south alone, away from any civilization. There is no land, no airplane, no ship.' Kaniukov's 56-meter balloon was powered by helium and hot air. The entire journey lasted 11 days and six hours.
