Russian Court Again Extends Detention of American Journalist Gershkovich 'Without Charges'

A court in Russia on Tuesday extended the 'temporary detention' of American journalist Evan Gershkovich until March 30; a ruling that has been issued several times 'without charges.' Gershkovich was arrested in late March 2023 in Yekaterinburg, about two thousand kilometers east of Moscow, while traveling to report, on charges of 'espionage' and has been in custody since then. The appeals court rejected the previous ruling that had extended the detention of this journalist from the American newspaper Wall Street Journal until a certain date, as he is now facing 'espionage charges.' While Gershkovich and the Wall Street Journal deny the charges, and the U.S. government says he should be released immediately, Russian officials have yet to provide any evidence to support their claims. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated last December that Moscow has no objection to prisoner exchanges, and any progress in this regard depends on whether the U.S. can 'satisfy' the Russian side. The U.S. claims Evan Gershkovich has been wrongfully detained and refers to him as a 'hostage.' Analysts believe that following the escalation of tensions between the U.S. and Russia after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Moscow is using imprisoned American citizens as leverage in negotiations.
