Russian Drone Attacks on Grain Storage Facilities in Odessa

Russian drones attacked the port and grain storage facilities in the southern coastal region of Odessa in the early hours of Wednesday, August 2, setting some of them on fire. Reuters reported that Oleg Kiper, the governor of the region, wrote on the Telegram messaging app that there were 'no reports of casualties' following the Russian drone attacks. Meanwhile, Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, and other military officials announced that Russian drones also targeted the city of Kyiv, and Ukrainian air defense units shot down the drones aimed at the city. The remnants of these drones fell in three areas, but there were no casualties. Vitali Klitschko stated on Telegram that some drones fell in the central Solomyansky area, damaging a non-residential building, while debris fell in the Svyatoshyn area, igniting a tree. Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukraine's agricultural and port infrastructure after avoiding the extension of the Black Sea grain deal, which allowed for the export of Ukrainian grain. According to Ukrainian media, drones entered from the Black Sea and then moved westward along the Danube River toward the port city of Izmail. Izmail is one of Ukraine's ports for sending grain to the city of Constanta in Romania. Ukrainian media also reported that for the first time since the end of the grain deal, several foreign cargo ships entered the port of Izmail via the Black Sea on Sunday. Another Russian attack in late July targeted the Izmail port terminal in the Danube Delta, destroying a grain warehouse. Russia and Ukraine are the world's major wheat suppliers, and according to the World Food Program, the global food crisis caused by their war has pushed 47 million people into 'acute hunger.' Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, calling it a 'special military operation' to disarm its neighbor. This war has so far killed thousands, displaced millions, and turned many cities in eastern and southern Ukraine into rubble.
