Russian Drone Attacks on Kharkiv; Ukraine: We Shot Down 11 'Shahed' Drones

Russia's drone attack on residential buildings and energy facilities in Kharkiv, Ukraine, on Thursday, April 5, resulted in the deaths of 4 people and power outages for 350,000 residents in the city. According to Reuters, Kharkiv, the second-largest city in Ukraine located 30 kilometers from the Russian border, has been heavily bombarded by Russian forces throughout this 25-month war, with its energy facilities repeatedly targeted. Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and has occupied parts of the country, drawing severe criticism from most countries worldwide. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as 'despicable' in a statement on X and reiterated his call for more air defense support from Ukraine's Western allies. Ole Sinegubov, the governor of Kharkiv, reported that three rescue workers were killed after responding to a residential block during a renewed Russian attack. He stated on Telegram that 12 people were injured, with three in serious condition. Sinegubov added that Russia used at least 15 drones in its attacks on Kharkiv. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces announced that of the 20 drones launched over the past 24 hours, 11 were of the 'Shahed' type. The Islamic Republic has faced numerous criticisms from countries around the world for sending drones to Russia. In this context, the United States has imposed multiple sanctions on the Islamic Republic for manufacturing and sending combat drones to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine. According to Reuters, the governor of Kharkiv stated that the drones targeted the 'Zmiivska' thermal power plant in the area, intensifying pressure on energy facilities that have been subjected to repeated air attacks in recent weeks. The Energy, Housing, and Utilities Committee of the Ukrainian Parliament stated that from March 23 to March 30, Russia targeted the country's critical energy infrastructure with over 150 missiles and more than 240 Shahed drones. The statement noted that these attacks damaged at least eight power plants, cutting off electricity, heating, and water for over 2 million citizens. It also stated that full restoration of these facilities could take months. Volodymyr Kudritsky, head of the national electricity grid operator in Ukraine, said at a press conference: 'Shahed attacks on energy facilities occur almost daily, and the intensity of the attacks has increased.' Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed on Thursday that it had neutralized Ukrainian drone attacks targeting two regions in western Russia. The ministry stated that its air defense shot down three drones over Belgorod, which borders Ukraine, and two drones over the Tula region. In another development, Ukraine and Finland signed a 10-year security pact, making Finland the eighth NATO member this year to agree to long-term security and defense support for Ukraine. In this context, the President of Finland announced that his country would send an additional $203 million in military aid, including air defense systems and ammunition, to Ukraine. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Thursday that Ukraine would eventually join NATO, as support for the country among NATO member states is 'strong.' Blinken traveled to Brussels to participate in a NATO foreign ministers' meeting coinciding with the 75th anniversary of NATO's founding. He told reporters that the purpose of this meeting is to 'help build a bridge for Ukraine's NATO membership.' Macron rejected Russia's claims regarding Ukraine and France's involvement in the attack on the Moscow concert. NATO Secretary-General warned that support from the Islamic Republic and North Korea for Russia has serious global consequences. The Secretary-General of NATO proposed the establishment of a financial fund to provide $100 billion in aid to Ukraine. Blinken in Paris: 'We will make any arms shipment to Russia impossible through cooperation with Europe.'
