Russian Drone Attacks on Kyiv Continued for the Second Consecutive Night

Ukrainian officials announced on Monday, October 30, that Russia launched several waves of drone attacks on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, for the second consecutive night, damaging several residential buildings and injuring at least one civilian. Russia also targeted Zaporizhia in southeastern Ukraine with a ballistic missile attack, resulting in the deaths of two civilians and injuring 15 others. The Ukrainian army reported that although air defense shot down 59 out of 116 attacking Russian drones, it was unable to intercept 45 others, which likely hit various locations in Ukraine. The army also stated that several attacks had damaged civilian infrastructure. Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv military administration, stated, "The enemy is not reducing the intensity of air attacks on Ukraine and Kyiv." He added that although none of the weapons hit their targets, debris injured at least one person. Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, wrote on Telegram that some roofs, facades of residential buildings, and power lines were damaged in three areas of Kyiv, with one apartment partially destroyed. The air raid alert in Kyiv lasted for five hours, and the air force declared the sky safe around 2 a.m. Ivan Fedorov, the governor of the Zaporizhia region, also announced on Telegram that Russia attacked this area on Monday morning. According to him, more than 30 houses were damaged in this attack, with the latest estimates indicating 15 people injured and two killed. In a separate attack in Kryvyi Rih in eastern Ukraine, five people were injured, and several multi-story buildings, shops, a post office, and a pharmacy were damaged. Reuters reported that it could not independently verify these reports, and Russia has not commented on these attacks so far. As more than 30 months have passed since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and there is still no end in sight for this war, Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, has repeatedly emphasized the necessity of maintaining the unity of Kyiv's partners at this stage of the war. In the latest instance of U.S. support for Ukraine, Lloyd Austin, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, announced a new package of military aid to Ukraine during his visit to Kyiv on October 30. In a meeting with Zelensky, Austin confirmed the U.S. commitment to provide a $400 million package "for ammunition, armored vehicles, and anti-tank weapons" to Ukraine. Earlier, on Friday, October 27, after a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels, the U.S. Secretary of Defense emphasized the long-term commitment of the U.S. and NATO to assist a "free and independent Ukraine," stating, "Our allies in NATO, like many countries around the world, continue to defend Ukraine's sovereignty and this country’s defense of itself." He pointed out the "two simultaneous main objectives for providing the necessary assistance to Ukraine to counter Russian aggression" and "ensuring the necessary resources to prevent and defend against future aggressions," stressing that Ukraine has been "very successful" in this regard and that Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has yet to achieve any of his strategic goals. Meanwhile, Iran's support for Russia's aggression against Ukraine and the transfer of ballistic missiles by the Iranian government to Russia have also caused concern and anger among Western countries. In response to the military cooperation of the Islamic Republic with Russia, the U.S. and the European Union have imposed several sanction packages against individuals and entities involved in supporting and developing these relations. Zelensky's efforts to garner support from Western allies for Ukraine's "Victory Plan" against Russia have been ongoing. The Russian attacks on Ukraine have left 17 injured. Austin emphasized the long-term commitment of the United States and NATO to assist a free and independent Ukraine. The United States has expressed concern over the deployment of North Korean soldiers to Russia to fight in Ukraine. The return of the bodies of 501 Ukrainian soldiers by Russia has also been noted, alongside negotiations between Zelensky and Western leaders regarding the end of the war. Zelensky stated that 12,000 North Korean military personnel have been stationed in Russia to fight in Ukraine and unveiled his proposed "Victory Plan" in parliament.
