Russian Lander Encounters Technical Issue While Approaching Moon's Surface

The Russian National Space Agency announced that the Luna-25 lander experienced an "anomalous situation" as it was approaching the Moon's surface. This Russian spacecraft is scheduled to land on Monday, August 21, at the Moon's South Pole, in an area where scientists believe there may be frozen water and other valuable elements. The Russian space agency stated in a release that during this operation, an "anomalous situation" occurred in its automatic station that prevented maneuvers with the specified parameters, and experts are analyzing the situation. The agency also released images of the Ziman crater taken by this spacecraft. This crater is the third deepest crater in the Moon's southern hemisphere, with a diameter of 190 kilometers and a depth of eight kilometers. The Russian space agency claims that the data received so far provides information about the chemical elements of the Moon's soil. It also mentioned that its equipment has recorded "micrometeorite impacts." Luna-25, which entered lunar orbit on August 16, is the first Russian spacecraft to undertake this mission since 1976. This spacecraft, roughly the size of a small car, is expected to operate for one year at the South Pole, where NASA and other space agencies have identified evidence of frozen water in craters in recent years. The presence of water on the Moon could be an important resource for future space exploration, as it can be used to produce fuel, thereby enhancing the Moon's potential as a gateway for travel to farther destinations in space, such as Mars. The Indian Space Agency has also begun its third lunar mission towards the less-explored South Pole and has entered lunar orbit. The spacecraft "Chandrayaan-3," which means "Mooncraft" in Sanskrit, embarked on this journey almost simultaneously with the Russian lander.
