Russian Missile Attack on Village in Ukraine Leaves at Least 51 Dead

On Thursday, October 5, the Russian army killed at least 51 people in a missile attack on a village in the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine. Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, and Oleg Synehubov, governor of Kharkiv region, stated that the Russian army shelled a café and a shop in the village at 1 PM on Thursday. A six-year-old child was also killed in this attack, and another child was injured. These attacks coincided with the arrival of Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, in Granada, Spain, to participate in the 'European Political Community' meeting. Mr. Zelensky wrote in a message on the social media platform Telegram that the most important issue for Ukraine is strengthening air defense, especially before the winter begins. Hours before this attack, Russia also targeted various locations in Ukraine with drones. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that out of a total of 29 Iranian 'Shahed' drones used in these attacks, 24 were intercepted and destroyed. The targets of these attacks were the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions in the south and areas in central Ukraine. After a group of congressional Republicans called for the elimination of funding for emergency assistance to Ukraine, Biden contacted key U.S. allies including Canada, Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania, France, the UK, the European Union, NATO, and Japan to assure them of U.S. military support for Ukraine. John Kirby, the White House National Security spokesperson, stated that leaders discussed efforts to continue sending necessary munitions and weapon systems for Ukraine's self-defense and to continue strengthening its air defense. Meanwhile, the U.S. Army Command announced that it had sent approximately 1.1 million rounds, which the U.S. Navy had seized from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps last year, to Ukraine.
