Russian Security Council Secretary Meets with Pezeshkian Amid Iran-Israel Tensions

Russian news agencies Interfax and TASS reported that Sergey Shoigu, the Secretary of the Russian Security Council, has arrived in Tehran for discussions with senior Iranian officials, including Masoud Pezeshkian, the President. This visit on Monday, August 15, comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the extremist group Hamas, in Tehran. Although Israeli officials have not claimed responsibility, the Islamic Republic of Iran blames Israel and has threatened punishment for the country. Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, has promised a 'severe punishment' for Israel due to this act, and on Sunday, the Iranian President stated that the Islamic Republic would not leave this assassination unanswered. In his meeting with Sergey Shoigu on Monday, Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated this stance, stating that Israel would 'receive a response for its crimes and audacity.' He also emphasized that Iran does not seek to 'expand the scope of the crisis' in the Middle East. Pezeshkian highlighted the development of relations with Russia as a priority in Iran's foreign policy and stressed the need to expedite the implementation of agreements between Tehran and Moscow. On the same day, a spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that Tehran does not want to escalate tensions in the region, but Israel must be 'punished' for its involvement in the killing of Ismail Haniyeh. Iran claims that the 'punishment' of Israel will be 'decisive and indisputable.' The Tasnim news agency, close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, reported that Shoigu's visit was planned. According to the Russian news agency RIA, this senior Russian official traveled to Iran at the invitation of Ali Akbar Ahmadian, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, with the aim of 'enhancing interaction and discussing regional, international, and bilateral security and political issues.' Fars news agency also reported that Sergey Shoigu intends to meet and discuss with the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Shoigu was previously the Minister of Defense of Russia for many years before the formation of Vladimir Putin's new government and played a significant role in the country's military invasion of Ukraine. The G7 has warned about missile cooperation between Tehran and Moscow; the U.S. has urged Iran not to escalate tensions. Since the beginning of the war with Ukraine, Russia has developed closer relations with Iran.
