Russia's Attack on a Supermarket in Eastern Ukraine Leaves 14 Dead

A Russian missile attack on a supermarket in the city of Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine left at least 14 dead and 43 injured. According to Ukrainian officials, a Russian missile struck this supermarket on Friday, August 9. Video footage shared on social media showed thick black smoke engulfing the destroyed building. The Ukrainian Interior Minister stated that rescue teams managed to extinguish the fire at the supermarket. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on his social media account that 'Russian terrorists' attacked a supermarket and a post office. He noted that some victims are still trapped under the rubble. Kostiantynivka is located about 13 kilometers from the front line in eastern Ukraine and is one of the areas in the Donetsk region under Ukrainian control. This city has been subjected to continuous missile and drone attacks from Russia in recent weeks. Ukraine condemns Russia's targeting of civilians, while Moscow denies intentionally attacking civilian targets. Initially, Ukrainian officials stated that the attack was carried out with artillery, but it later became clear that a Russian missile destroyed the building. Meanwhile, the United Nations reports that last month was the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians. According to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, civilian casualties in Ukraine have significantly increased due to the escalation of Russian attacks across the country.
