Russian officials on Sunday, October 8, reported that they had shot down over 100 Ukrainian drones in various locations across the country. One of these attacks caused a fire in an apartment block. According to the Associated Press, citing Alexander Gusev, the governor of the Voronezh region, 17 Ukrainian drones were spotted over the Voronezh area of Russia, damaging an apartment complex and a private house; however, no casualties were reported. Vasily Golubev, the governor of Rostov, also reported an attack by 18 other drones over the Rostov region and a fire in the area's forests. Golubev stated that there was no danger to residential areas, but firefighters were working to contain a fire that had engulfed 20 hectares of forest. Ukraine has repeatedly asked the West for permission to strike into Russian territory. In response, the Kremlin has threatened to use its nuclear power. In Ukraine, 16 civilians were injured in a nighttime Russian attack in the city of Zaporizhzhia in the south of the country. Ivan Fedorov, the governor of the region, wrote on his official Telegram channel that the city was targeted in 10 separate attacks by Russian guided bombs, damaging a high-rise building and several residential homes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also stated that the Zaporizhzhia attack had damaged the city’s transport lines. In a separate news item, Zelensky attended a memorial ceremony for the 83rd anniversary of the mass murder of Jews in the Babi Yar ravine. Babi Yar, a ravine in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, was the site of the mass murder of nearly 34,000 Jews in just 48 hours during the Nazi occupation in 1941. Zelensky stated at the ceremony, 'Babi Yar is a clear testimony to the crimes that regimes led by intimidation and violence can commit. These regimes are no different from each other at different times. But the world's response must be different. This is a lesson the world must learn. We must protect humanity, life, and justice.'
