Scientists to Soon Introduce Earth-like Planet

The German weekly "Der Spiegel" reported on Friday, August 12, that scientists are preparing to introduce a planet that appears to be similar to Earth and is located at a distance from its star that makes conditions suitable for life. The magazine cited an unnamed source, adding that this exoplanet orbits a star named Proxima Centauri, which has been significantly studied and is part of the Alpha Centauri star system. The report states: "It is believed that this planet, which has not yet been named, resembles Earth and is at a distance from the star Proxima Centauri that allows for the presence of liquid water on its surface, which is a crucial factor for the formation of life." Der Spiegel further notes that scientists have not previously observed any Earth-like planet at such a close distance to us. The European Southern Observatory is expected to announce its findings at the end of August. The report from Der Spiegel did not provide further details. According to the French news agency, a spokesperson for the European Southern Observatory confirmed awareness of Der Spiegel's report but declined to confirm or deny it, emphasizing that no comments would be made on the matter for now. NASA has previously announced the discovery of new planets, but most of them were either extremely hot or extremely cold, making the likelihood of liquid water on their surfaces unlikely. Some of them, unlike Earth, which is a rocky planet, are composed of gas, like the planets Jupiter and Neptune in our solar system. Last year, the U.S. space agency announced the discovery of an exoplanet, describing it as the "most Earth-like twin." This planet, named "Kepler-425b," is about 60% larger than Earth and may have active volcanoes, oceans of water, and sunlight similar to that of Earth. Its gravitational pull is about twice that of Earth, and its year lasts 385 days. However, given its distance of 1,400 light-years, it is unlikely that humanity will be able to travel to this planet in the near future. In comparison, the exoplanet orbiting Proxima Centauri, if confirmed, is located 4.24 light-years from Earth. Although this distance seems small compared to the vastness of space, it remains a very long and inaccessible distance for human travel using current spacecraft technology. According to information published on NASA's website, the distance of this planet from Earth is about 271 times the distance from Earth to the Sun. Proxima Centauri, discovered in 1915, is one of three stars in the Alpha Centauri star system, which is primarily visible from the Southern Hemisphere of Earth.
