Second Anniversary Ceremony of the September 11 Terrorist Attacks in the U.S. - 2003-09-11

On the second anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Americans across the country commemorate the victims of that tragedy. At the site of the World Trade Center in New York, 200 children and young people who lost their loved ones took turns reading the names of nearly 3,000 victims. At the White House in Washington, President Bush observed a moment of silence. He began the memorial service by attending a church near the White House and afterward stated: 'We remember those who lost their lives. We honor the heroes we witnessed. We recall the compassion and greatness of our fellow citizens on that terrible day.' Ceremonies were also held at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania, where two other hijacked planes crashed. Kofi Annan, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, stated that the second anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks should remind the world that international cooperation in the fight against terrorism is vital. In an interview with Reuters television aired on Thursday, he said that the recent attack on the UN office in Baghdad and other attacks prove that terrorism has not been defeated.
