Second Iranian Woman Wins Nobel Peace Prize; Honoring Narges Mohammadi's 'Unwavering Courage'

The Nobel Peace Committee in Norway awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize to Narges Mohammadi, a human rights activist imprisoned in Iran, on Friday, October 6. This award was given due to Mohammadi's decisive role in combating the oppression of women in Iran and her fight for human rights and freedom for all. She is the second Iranian woman to receive this award, after Shirin Ebadi. Following Mohammadi's success in receiving this prestigious global award, U.S. President Joe Biden congratulated her and called on Iranian officials to immediately release her and other gender equality activists. Biden highlighted Mohammadi's strengthened resolve despite her current unjust imprisonment and reiterated that the award is a recognition of her and a sign of the world's response to her call for freedom and equality. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also reacted to the award, stating that it is well-deserved for Mohammadi, who continues to defend human rights and gender equality even from behind bars. The U.S. continues to demand her freedom and the release of all Iranians detained merely for their efforts to achieve human rights. Other global leaders, including those from Germany, France, Italy, Canada, and Israel, also welcomed the award, emphasizing the need for Mohammadi's immediate release and the release of all political prisoners in Iran. The award has been met with widespread support from Iranians, including Shirin Ebadi, who stated that it signifies the world's recognition of Iranian women's struggles. However, Iranian government officials expressed their discontent, attempting to downplay the significance of the award. Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian claimed that Qassem Soleimani was more deserving of the prize, while other officials criticized the award as misdirected. Narges Mohammadi, born in 1972 in Zanjan, has been imprisoned multiple times over the past two decades due to her human rights activism. She has been a prominent figure in advocating for women's rights, the abolition of the death penalty, and improving prison conditions in Iran, despite currently serving a 12-year sentence.
