Second U.S. Aircraft Carrier Becomes Operational in the Middle East Ahead of Next Round of Negotiations with Iran

Satellite images show that the second U.S. aircraft carrier has entered operational status in the waters of the Middle East ahead of the next round of negotiations between Iran and the United States regarding Tehran's nuclear program. According to a report by the Associated Press on Tuesday, April 15, the USS Carl Vinson, based in California, has joined the USS Harry S. Truman as the second U.S. aircraft carrier in the region. Satellite images taken on Monday by the European Union's Copernicus program show the Vinson operating northeast of Socotra, an island near the entrance to the Gulf of Aden. The aircraft carrier is accompanied by the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Princeton and two Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers, USS Stethem and USS William P. Lawrence. The report adds that the United States has ordered the Vinson to join the USS Harry S. Truman, which has been present in the waters since the start of U.S. operations against the Houthi rebels in Yemen on March 15. Images released by the U.S. Navy show that the Vinson has been preparing weapons and launching F-35 and F/A-18 fighter jets from its deck in recent days. The U.S. Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain and overseeing military operations in the Middle East, has declined to comment on the details of the carrier's operations. The operations of the USS Carl Vinson and its strike group in the Arabian Sea come as areas of Yemen controlled by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels were once again targeted by airstrikes attributed to the United States on Monday evening. U.S. officials have repeatedly described the month-long campaign against the Houthis in Yemen as a tool to pressure Iran in negotiations. President Donald Trump has threatened that if a deal with Tehran regarding its nuclear program is not reached, Iran's nuclear facilities will be targeted by airstrikes, with Israel participating in that effort. Representatives from both countries met on April 11 in Muscat, the capital of Oman, and Steve Witikoff, Trump's special envoy for Middle East affairs, described the talks as 'positive, constructive, and convincing.' The next round of negotiations, as announced by Iran, is scheduled to take place in Muscat on April 19. Witikoff stated on Fox News that 'Iran does not need to enrich uranium above 3.67 percent, and the focus of the agreement with Tehran will be on verifying uranium enrichment levels and also verifying the military dimensions of the nuclear program, including missile aspects.' Iran is currently enriching uranium to a level of 60 percent, which is not far from the 90 percent enrichment needed for nuclear weapons. The newspaper 'Javan,' close to the Revolutionary Guards, emphasized in its editorial on Tuesday that Tehran is ready to compromise to reduce its enrichment level. The newspaper wrote: 'Why not do what we have done before and reach a middle agreement that only addresses two specific issues? This would not be considered a deviation from the Islamic Republic's ideals anywhere in the world.' Meanwhile, Ali Mohammad Naeini, a spokesman for the Revolutionary Guards, stated that 'national security and military defense capabilities are among the red lines of the Islamic Republic of Iran that will not be negotiated under any circumstances.' Trump remarked that 'Iran is playing us for fools because they are used to negotiating with ignorant people.'
