Security Agency: Terrorist Threats Against Denmark Have Increased Due to Gaza War and 'Quran Burnings'

The Danish Security and Intelligence Service reported on Thursday, April 2, that following the October 7 terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel and a series of Quran burnings in Denmark, terrorist threats against this Scandinavian country and its interests worldwide have increased. The agency assessed the overall threat level as 4 out of 5 but added that threats within this level have increased. According to the statement from the Danish Security and Intelligence Service, 'The conflict between Israel and several militant groups has raised concerns among many people, including in Denmark.' The statement continued: '[This] conflict also has significant potential for radicalization and mobilization, which could potentially activate actors for spontaneous or planned responses in Denmark, including terrorist attacks.' Anti-Islam activists in Denmark and Sweden have burned the Quran several times over the past year. These two countries respect freedom of speech and allow critical activities against all religions and sects, including Islam. Sweden also raised its terrorist alert level, citing the neutralization of several terrorist threats following Quran burnings in the country. In an effort to reduce tensions with Muslim countries, the Danish Parliament passed a law in mid-December of last year making the burning of the Quran in public places illegal. Swedish officials reported the arrest of four suspects related to 'terrorist operations.' An Iraqi immigrant in Sweden burned the Quran again; police arrested several individuals. New cases of 'Quran burning' in Europe; increased efforts to de-escalate tensions with Islamic countries.
