Senator Bob Menendez Found Guilty in Bribery Case

A jury has found Bob Menendez, a senior Democratic senator from New Jersey, guilty of bribery charges. After nine weeks of lengthy sessions, on Tuesday, July 16, the jury convicted Menendez on 16 counts, which could lead to a sentence of up to 200 years in prison for the prominent politician. Prosecutors stated that the chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee used his power to protect his allies from criminal investigations and enrich them, including his wife. The jury's verdict emphasizes that Menendez abused his position by actions such as meeting with Egyptian intelligence officials and assisting the country in accessing millions of dollars in U.S. military aid. The 70-year-old Menendez did not testify in court but claimed he was merely fulfilling his duties as the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman. He stated that the gold bars found by the FBI in his New Jersey home belonged to his wife, Nadine Menendez. The trial of Mrs. Menendez, who has also previously declared her innocence regarding this case, has been postponed due to her breast cancer treatment and will be held after her recovery. This ruling, issued in a federal court in Manhattan, comes four months before the election and potentially jeopardizes Menendez's chances for re-election as an independent candidate. Immediately after the verdict, Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader, called for Menendez to resign, stating, 'In light of this criminal verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country and resign.' This is the second indictment against the Democratic senator; a previous case in 2017 was closed due to a hung jury, but the Senate Ethics Committee found that he had improperly accepted gifts from an ophthalmologist, failed to report them, and then used his influence to benefit that ophthalmologist. The jury's decision follows a lengthy investigation after an FBI raid in June 2022 at the couple's home across the Hudson River in New York City. Agents found gold bars worth nearly $150,000 and $480,000 in cash, mostly in bundles of $100 bills, in a Mercedes-Benz in the garage of the house. They also discovered cash hidden in boots, shoeboxes, and jackets belonging to the senator. Menendez's defense attorneys argued that the gold bars belonged to his wife and that he hoarded cash at home after hearing how his family fled Cuba in 1951 and hid cash in a watch by his grandfather. One of the main charges against Menendez involves using his position in the U.S. Senate for actions benefiting Egypt, which, despite good relations with the U.S., is accused of widespread human rights violations. One such action was preventing the cancellation of $300 million in aid to Cairo. According to prosecutors, Nadine Menendez facilitated a meeting between her husband and the head of Egypt's intelligence service in Washington by exchanging several text messages with an Egyptian general, one of which stated, 'Whenever you need anything, you have my number, and we will take care of everything.' The charges against Menendez were filed last September, and over time, additional charges such as bribery, extortion, fraud, obstruction of justice, conspiracy, and acting as an agent of a foreign power were added. Bob Menendez, the son of Cuban immigrant parents, has been in power since 1986 when he was elected mayor of Union City in New Jersey. He served in the state Senate and then for 14 years as a member of the House of Representatives, and in 2006, when Jon Corzine was elected governor of New Jersey, he took over Corzine's Senate seat. He is a staunch opponent of Russia and China and has repeatedly called for tougher actions against Vladimir Putin's regime since Moscow's military invasion of Ukraine. Menendez was also one of the opponents of the nuclear deal between the Obama administration and Iran known as the JCPOA.
