Senator Brownback's Nowruz Message to Iranians - 2003-03-21. Last week, the Persian section of Voice of America informed its listeners about a resolution presented in the U.S. Senate in support of the Iranian people's quest for freedom and democracy. One of the sponsors of this resolution was Republican Senator Sam Brownback. Following the introduction of this resolution, Iranians, both inside and outside of Iran, contacted the American senator via phone, fax, and email, urging him to continue his support for establishing freedom and democracy in Iran. Senator Brownback sent a congratulatory message to the Iranian people for the New Year, which is translated here: I am pleased to extend my best wishes and congratulations for a joyful Nowruz to the people of Iran. I have heard numerous reports about the widespread celebrations taking place inside Iran. Once again, the people of Iran are demonstrating their courage and bravery by celebrating Nowruz, defying the government's orders to abandon their rich culture. Nowruz is a time of new beginnings. It is said that how individuals spend this day sets the tone for how they will spend the entire year. Thousands upon thousands of Iranians dedicate this day to the pursuit of freedom, honoring their ancient civilization, and standing proudly against tyranny. In fact, today is a new day in Iran, and I am confident that this year will be your year of freedom. I have been moved by receiving hundreds of phone calls and faxes due to the resolution I introduced, numbered 82, which supports the people of Iran. I have never received such a supportive reaction for any of my efforts and actions in the past. I am very grateful for your support and promise you that I will never leave you alone.
