The 69-year-old senator mentioned that he is 'suffering greatly' as a result of these accusations. He criticized the legal proceedings, stating that the U.S. Attorney's Office is not engaged in legal proceedings but rather in harassment and torture. Menendez emphasized, 'I have received nothing—absolutely— from the Qatari government or on behalf of the Qatari government to promote their image or their issues.' Previously, Bob Menendez faced accusations of conspiring as an 'agent of the Egyptian government.' He has also denied these charges. In the federal indictment in Manhattan, New York, Mr. Menendez was accused of being in contact with Egyptian military and intelligence officials from January 2018 to June 2022 and taking actions in favor of this country. These accusations include writing a letter to other senators to lift a hold on $300 million in aid to Egypt, transferring information about U.S. embassy staff in Egypt, and providing non-public information to Egyptian officials regarding military aid. He has denied these allegations. The Democratic senator was also tried in 2017 for another corruption case, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict on his guilt.
